Hard Akari puzzles require more than just the basics. Here are strategies specifically for cracking tough grids:
Even on hard puzzles, the same rules apply. Scan for number 4 and number 0 cells first. On expert grids, these are less common, but they still exist — and they are the most efficient way to start.
After placing each bulb, identify every white cell that is still dark. If a dark cell can only be lit from one direction, that direction is forced. On hard puzzles, this is often the only way to make progress — do not skip this step.
When direct logic stalls, pick a cell with exactly two possibilities and test one. If it leads to a contradiction, the other option must be correct. This is a formal proof technique that expert solvers use regularly.
The daily challenge on weekends is a 14×14 grid — the same size as our hardest puzzles. Regular practice on the daily puzzle is the best way to build chain reasoning skills.
Hard Akari puzzles use 12×12 or 14×14 grids packed with walls and numbered constraints. Solving them requires advanced deduction chains — placing one bulb can cascade into multiple forced placements across the grid.
Place light bulbs on empty cells so that every white cell is illuminated. Light travels in straight lines until it hits a wall. No two bulbs may shine on each other. Numbers on walls indicate how many bulbs sit adjacent to that wall.
